If you lack in any of the essential life skill areas , chances are you are being deprived in some way – be it financial, fun, work opportunities, experiencing new exciting things, meeting new people, traveling, trying new hobbies, joining a group… the list of what you're missing out on can be endless.
And it doesn't matter if you are a housewife, an office clerk, a gardener, a secretary, a manager, a librarian, a sales person, a mechanic, a brain surgeon, a CEO, or even a Coach… what you do in life does not offer you immunity.
We are NOT all created equal. For example, we are NOT all born outgoing and confident knowing exactly what to say and how and when to say it. Many people shy away from certain situations in life simply because they don't know how to handle it, they don't know what to say or how to behave.
So, how do your life skills stand up? Consider these questions:
- Are you a confident, outgoing person, or are you a shy opposite? Can you mingle merrily or do you prefer dark corners? Or do you just make excuses and stay home?
- Can you stand up for yourself confidently or do you avoid confrontations because you never know what to say or you get all hot and say the wrong things? Or perhaps you say nothing at all and suffer in silence?
- If asked to speak in public, even if just to thank a crowd of people, can you do so without becoming lost for words, stuttering or blushing? Or is the crowd riveted by your witty repartee?
- Can you speak comfortably with your seniors and peers at work – could you ask for a well deserved pay raise or discuss a delicate issue? Can you handle the "no" word? Can you say it?
- Do you know how to handle difficult or argumentative people and remain poised and relaxed? Do you know how to handle ANY conflicting situation comfortably and easily without feeling or becoming ruffled and being able to diffuse them so they also calm down?
- Can you lead a group of people, or are you the person who hides at the back of the line? Does this fear of leadership hold you back from a much wanted promotion or new job opportunity?
- Does being introverted mean you miss out on opportunities in life that you might otherwise love to try? Is your life governed by feelings of timidity and fear that hold you back?
- Have you got a "to do" list that is now so overwhelming that it has taken over your life? Oh, sorry… you don't HAVE a life… you have a to do list! Or do you have everything under control and lead a balanced, fun life?
- Overall would you say you feel stressed, anxious, tense and pressured – mentally and physically, most of the time or some of the time or never? Or are you relaxed, at peace and feeling balanced and at one with the world?
- Do you have goals? Dreams? Do you want to know how you can make a goal and achieve it – even if you have a to-do list as long as your arm?
Any lack in the above areas is holding you back in every aspect of your life – your career, your relationships, your entire existence! You miss out because you won't try new things or speak up for yourself and everyone and anyone can, and probably does, take you for granted and walk all over you. And it doesn't matter if you're the one taking the orders or giving them.
